About the course

Course description

West Hill Golf Club is one of Surrey’s classic heathland courses, set among towering Scots pines and heather near Woking. Designed by Cuthbert Butchart in the early 20th century, the course has changed remarkably little over the decades and remains a fine example of traditional strategic golf. At just over 6,300 yards, West Hill is not especially long by modern standards, but it demands accuracy and thoughtful course management. Heather, mature trees and well-placed bunkers frame the fairways, while the Brookwood Brook comes into play on several holes. Approach shots are particularly important, with subtly contoured greens that place a premium on finding the right section of the putting surface. The layout is known for its variety, including five distinctive par 3s and a strong closing stretch. The 15th, in particular, is widely regarded as one of the standout short holes on the course. Firm, sandy turf helps West Hill retain the fast-running character associated with the best English heathland golf and makes it enjoyable throughout much of the year. Alongside nearby Woking and Worplesdon, West Hill forms part of Surrey’s celebrated “Three Ws” and is consistently ranked among Britain’s leading inland courses while offering a peaceful, traditional golfing atmosphere.

West Hill: Classic Heathland Golf with a Serious Strategic Test

West Hill is a classic Surrey heathland course where strategic play is rewarded from the first tee. The opening two par 4s are relatively forgiving before the 469-yard 3rd and stunning par 3 4th begin to show the course’s teeth. The 4th is a particularly demanding short hole, with a heavily sloping back-to-front green where there is very little room to leave the ball.

Elevation changes, thick heather and strategically placed bunkers make position off the tee crucial throughout the round. Several holes have trouble around the 280–300-yard mark, while the downhill 1st and 16th bring a stream into play around 250 yards, giving longer hitters plenty of reasons to think twice before reaching for driver.

The course was in excellent condition, with immaculate fairways and firm, quick greens that took the slopes more severely than they first appeared. The heather added both to the challenge and the scenery, while the surrounding pines and deciduous trees gave the course a peaceful, secluded feel despite plenty of groups playing around us. Members and staff were also extremely welcoming, and pace of play was never an issue.

The 149-yard 13th was the standout hole for me, tucked away in a quiet corner of the course with two large bunkers protecting the green and only around five yards of safe landing area either side of the pin. The downhill 17th was another highlight, with a great view across the course from the tee.

The Grass driving range is a short walk from the pro shop, and all bookings include a token for 30 balls, enough for a perfect warm up.

West Hill is a very well-thought-out golf course that rewards good course management and precise approach play. With firm, undulating greens and plenty of strategic trouble, it provides a serious test for golfers who can control their ball and think their way around a course

What stood out

The greens and strategic design. The firm, fast surfaces magnified the natural slopes, while the positioning of the heather, bunkers and streams meant that the best score often came from choosing the right shot rather than simply hitting the longest one.

Best for

Golfers who want a pristine, but challenging heathland course . West Hill particularly rewards accurate approach play and good course management, with enough trouble around the course to keep even strong golfers thinking from tee to green.

Before you go

West Hill is a walking course, with relatively short walks between greens and tees. Visitors are welcome Monday–Friday, with some summer weekend afternoon availability, and handicap restrictions apply to visitors. The club currently recommends contacting them directly for visitor bookings.
